Last August 11, 2007, Karate Development Arts and Sports (KDA) held a seminar with Sensei Jojie Mercado, a fifth dan black belter from ISKF San Francisco. The morning session was for beginners (white to green belters), and the afternoon session was for advance-colored belters (blue to brown) and black belters.
Sensei Jojie with white to green belts Sensei Jojie Mercado taught different lessons in the seminar, such as improving their kihon (basics), reviewing the katas (forms), and practicing their skills in kumite (sparring). For the beginners, he taught basic kihon drills and emphasized lessons on one-step sparring. For the advance-colored belts and black belters he taught basic kihon, advance katas, drills in kumite and emphasized gihon kumite (5-step sparring). He also emphasized the importance of having well-established kihon skills to be able to perform excellent katas and execute exceptional kumite skills.
Overlooking students' performance At a larger scale, he discussed proper etiquette with the students, such as respecting oneself and others. He also said that a good karateka must be able to live out the principles of karate in his or her daily life, improving themselves physically, mentally, socially and emotionally.
Sensei Jojie with KDA Chief Instructor (Sensei David Lay) and President (Sensei Roehl Parungao) All in all, those who attended the seminar were able to expand their knowledge and skills in karate. We can now expect better karatekas from KDA!
