After being encouraged by her family upon seeing the advertisement of ABS-CBN that they were looking for a female martial artist, 3- Time Sea Games Gold medalist Gretchen Malalad had no idea that she was to do an audition for the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition.
Becoming a part of the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition made her very excited. She felt no anxiety upon the notion that she will be joining well-known celebrities. Much of her time is dedicated to the country. The proof of the matter is her winning 3 consecutive gold medals from the Sea Games. During the recent 2005 Sea Games held in the country, with over thousands of fans in Mandaue City Sports Complex, Malalad added another gold medal to her legend as she defeated Nguyen Thi Nga of Vietnam in the +60kg Kumite division. Also known as the former Binibining Pilipinas candidate, she would always say "A gold medal is better than winning a beauty title". Rigorous preparation was done before the big event. The RP Karate team stayed in Europe for 6 months under the hands of World Cup Kumite Champion Guiseppe Romano before the 2005 Sea Games. The competitions held in Italy and France served as a tune-up fight for the team, especially for Malalad due to her fight to defend her gold medal from the 2003 Busan Sea Games. Every day was an entire day of training as they would engage in jogging and plyometrics in the morning, self- training in the afternoon, and kumite practices in the evening. RP Team Kumite led by Malalad bagged the gold after defeating Iran and Romania during the Adriatic Karate Competition held there. Malalad also managed to grab the gold in the +60kg kumite event.
