Dojo Kun
Calligraphy by Masatoshi Nakayama. Taken from Wikipedia.org.

Every student of Karate should know and follow their Dojo Kun. Taken literally, "Dojo Kun" refers to rules inside the training venue. However, it is expected that students do not limit themselves to practising within the dojo. They are highly encouraged to practice the values they learn in the dojo to their daily lives. After all, Karate is a way of life that strengthens practitioners physically, mentally and emotionally. As such, the Dojo Kun is recited at the end of the class after Mokuso (meditation).

Below are the five equal principles of the Shotokan Karate Dojo Kun created by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi. Each start with “Hitotsu!” or “One!” which emphasizes that all five bear the same importance and priority.

Hitotsu! Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto!
One! Seek perfection of character!

Hitotsu! Makoto no michi wo mamoru koto!

One! Be faithful!

Hitotsu! Dory?ku no seishin wo yashinau koto!
One! Endeavour!

Hitotsu! Reigi wo omonzuru koto!
One! Refrain from violent behavior!

Hitotsu! Kekki no y? wo imashimuru koto!
One! Respect Others!
